Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional Therapy Iowa Holistic Dentistry

Restoring proper function for better breathing, sleep, and overall health.

  • Airway-focused
  • Root-cause approach
  • For children & adults

What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a specialized program that retrains the muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, jaw, and face to function as they were designed.

It focuses on:

  • Proper tongue posture (resting on the palate)
  • Correct swallowing patterns
  • Nasal breathing
  • Balanced facial muscle function

These muscles play a critical role in airway health, facial development, bite alignment, speech, sleep quality, and overall wellness.

Think of it as physical therapy for the mouth and face.

Why Do People Need Myofunctional Therapy?

Modern habits often interfere with proper oral development, including:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb or pacifier use
  • Soft, processed diets
  • Tongue-tie restrictions
  • Poor posture and airway habits

Over time, this may contribute to:

  • Snoring or sleep-disordered breathing
  • Teeth grinding, clenching, or TMJ discomfort
  • Crowded teeth or orthodontic relapse
  • Speech challenges
  • Headaches, neck, or facial tension
  • Daytime fatigue or poor sleep

This works to address the root cause, not just manage symptoms.

Who Can Benefit?

Children

  • Mouth breathing
  • Speech concerns
  • Crowding or narrow arches
  • Behavioral or sleep challenges
  • Lip or tongue ties

Teens

  • Orthodontic support
  • Relapse prevention
  • Jaw tension or headaches

Adults

  • Snoring or sleep concerns
  • TMJ pain or clenching
  • Post-orthodontic stability
  • Facial tension or airway issues

If the mouth muscles aren’t functioning optimally, the body compensates and that’s where problems begin.

Why a Holistic Approach?

At Iowa Holistic Dentistry, we look beyond teeth.

We focus on:

  • Airway health
  • Muscle function
  • Oral habits
  • Facial development
  • Long-term stability

By correcting muscle patterns, we help support:

  • Better breathing and sleep
  • Orthodontic stability
  • Reduced tension and pain
  • Whole-body wellness

Because function matters at every age.

Tongue-Tie Support

If a tongue-tie release is recommended, therapy may be modified to include specialized pre- and post-release exercises to support optimal healing and long-term results.

Kassidy Registered Dental Hygienist (1)

Myofunctional Therapy with Kassidy

Kassidy McKenna, RDH, IAOMT, OMT

Kassidy began her dental career as a dental assistant, working for five years before earning her dental hygiene degree in 2021. She has been with Iowa Holistic Dentistry for the past year as a biologic dental hygienist and earned her accreditation through the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology in September.

Her passion for holistic health grew after starting a family with her high school sweetheart from Belmond, Iowa. Together they have two children and two dogs. Through her own family’s wellness journey, Kassidy became deeply interested in airway health and myofunctional therapy after realizing how common these issues are in both children and adults. She graduated from the MyoMentor program in December with her OMT certification in order to practice Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy.

She is passionate about helping patients understand the connection between oral function, breathing, and overall health.
